The Lexmark Prevail Pro705 ($199 direct), one of Lexmark's Professional series of inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs), has a solid feature set for a micro or home office, including fax, ADF, and auto-duplexer. It can print from and scan to USB keys and memory cards in various formats. It could double as a home and home-office printer in a pinch, but its features are largely focused on the office.

The Prevail Pro705 is reasonably compact at 9.8 by 18.3 by 15.4 inches (HWD), and weighing 20 pounds. Its tilt-up front panel includes an alphanumeric keypad and 2.4-inch color LCD screen along with various function buttons and a 4-way controller. The paper tray has a 150-sheet capacity, which should be fine for most micro or home offices. On top is the 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF), for feeding multi-page documents for copying, faxing, or scanning. In back is an automatic duplexer, for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper.

A front USB port permits scanning to, or printing from, a USB thumb drive, and you can preview your images on the LCD. (The port also lets you print from a PictBridge-enabled cameras.) A memory-card slot accepts media in (standard-sized) Memory Stick, SD, MultiMediaCard, and xD formats. The Prevail Pro705 offers Ethernet, WiFi, and USB connectivity;. I tested it over Ethernet on a network with a PC running Windows Vista.

Speed and Output Quality
The Prevail Pro705 printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at 2.5 effective pages per minute (ppm), a somewhat pokey speed for an MFP in its price range. Text quality for the Prevail Pro705 was at the high end of average for an inkjet. It's good enough for schoolwork or internal business use, though I'd hesitate to use the Pro705 for documents that require a professional appearance, such as a resume.

The Prevail Pro705's graphics quality was a little below average for an inkjet. Issues included banding, slightly uneven distribution of ink, posterization (abrupt shifts in color where they should be gradual), dithering (the breakup of solid areas into graininess or a fine dot pattern), and difficulties in printing very thin lines. Still, the graphics are good enough for schoolwork and general business use; whether you'd use them for PowerPoint handouts depends on how picky you are and who your audience is.
